Ensemble Studios to Close After Halo Wars Release [Updated]

Ensemble Studios to Close After Halo Wars Release [Updated]
Written Wednesday, September 10, 2008 by Dan Webb

Kotaku are reporting that sources on the inside of Ensemble Studios have told them that the long standing and successful developer will be closing, but only after Halo Wars is released.

Shane Kim, Microsoft's Corporate VP, is said to have come in and dealt the crushing blow, which seems like the worst "thank you" and "great job on our upcoming exclusive" I have ever heard.

This isn't the first time Microsoft have seeked to get rid of one its developers with BioWare going to EA and Bungie buying itself out in recent times.

How this will effect the final product remains to be seen? Shacknews's sources claim that they have "offered incentives" for those remaining there to complete the title but come on, your heart's not going to be in it when you know you're beloved studio is closing down.

All this as well when Ensemble announces that Age of Empire sells 20 million overall units. Crazy!

Update: So it appears that Gamespot's news piece on the closure contains some more, "what do they do now" info.

Apparently the "leadership team" are forming their own development house and are already entering in to agreements with Microsoft to support Halo Wars after launch "as well as work on other projects with Microsoft Game Studios".

I suppose that's something right? Seems a little pointless to close a studio that is unwanted by its parent company, only to start another studio and enter in to agreements with the same company that just closed you down. Nice and simple ... Right? ... Right? Someone must agree?

Ah man that is rotten. What a big slap in the face. I see something being added to the game that Microsoft doesn't want.

That's unfortunate.

I respect those that still are willing to put 100% into Halo Wars though, good for those few guys.

know whats funny. ensemble was forced to make the game since microsoft owns them. my inside guy there told me all these great things about halo wars and i'm stoked to play it. it's unfortunate that they are closing down after being open and making games for about 15 or so years. another disappoint from microsoft.

Manager,"You're fired, but will you deliver this pizza on your way home?"

Microsoft is after money. They DON'T CARE ABOUT PEOPLE! RROD= cheap manufacturing becuz they were too cheap. They force designers to throw games out that are loaded with bugs and glitches. They do an occasional nice thing here and there, but they never lose track of their goal, money.

The worst part of it is... that they have the best system out there. WTF?!?!

i can see halo wars turning into the next shadowrun,so much potential yet microsoft tells them they are shuting down when the game releases so they half-ass it, i dont blame them really, your heart just isnt in it anymore.

This had the potential to be great, just like shadowrun did but with the lack of updates and DLC it probally wont achieve what it set out to.

(i know it says they will support it but it is microsoft and i doubt they will want too much time spent on it.)

I don't see why they would close Ensemble because it is one of their best money makers due to the AoE series which in the art book for the 3rd teases at a 4,5 and i think 6th AoE microsoft is deciding to throw money with this decision

Matter of fact, I just learned about this in accounting. One big company with subdivisions will pay more in taxes as a whole in comparison to two separate but co-existing companies that have separate accounting.

It's an accounting loophole that ultimately allows BOTH COMPANIES TO PAY LESS in revenue taxes.

tl;dr they're doing it to make more money.

If Halo Wars is even half the game it's hyped to be, maybe we won't need loads of support post-launch. Or at the very least maybe I can make myself believe that statement between now and launch.

Ensemble Studios closing? I'm very surprised and at a loss for words....

Wow calm down guys. Microsoft said they would give as many as they could jobs within microsoft who aren't going to the new studio. Obviously Esemble doesn't have horrible relations if they still plan on working with microsoft after. There must be something under the sheets we can't see. If they were your millions of dollars maybe you'd understand too? So please stop complaining and crying! This happens too often for you to pretend you hate microsoft. All I care about is what's releasing, not "what could have been". Goob job Microsoft keep up the authority! :)

I agree #s14, 36, and 62.

It's never good to hear a developer closing its doors for good. Although i've never played any of the games Ensemble created (becuase I don't like RTSs), it sucks to know that by closing its studios there's one less developer to make games meaning less originality in the industry.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
